DÓM tér and the Fogadalmi templom (7 minutes/550 m)
The city’s most famous attraction, the Fogadalmi templom, or more commonly known as the Dóm, was renovated in 2015 with an investment of more than 2 billion forints. The modern visitor center was also completed at this time. The crypt was rebuilt, a completely new exhibition was opened, and visitors can explore it with the help of a “from cellar to attic” visual guide tour. The cathedral’s surroundings, its public spaces, the Dömötör Tower, and the National Pantheon in Dóm Square were also renewed.
The western tower of the Fogadalmi templom, facing the city, is open to visitors. 302 steps lead up to the tower, and your reward will be a lookout point at a height of 46 meters, offering a unique panorama of Szeged.
Every summer, Dóm Square hosts the Szeged Open-Air Festival, or as the locals simply call it, the Szabadtéri. Dóm Square, surrounded by the arcade in front of the Fogadalmi templom, boasts excellent acoustics, making it an ideal venue for both musical and theatrical performances. Few people know that this is one of Europe’s largest movable open-air stages and auditoriums, with a seating capacity of 4000 people. The first performance was held in 1931, and since then – apart from the twenty years between 1939 and 1959, and the forced break in 2020 due to COVID 19 – the success of the performances has been unbroken, attracting more and more visitors to the city year after year.
