Dugonics Square (2 minutes/120 m)
Dugonics Square is Szeged’s second most frequented square, after Széchenyi Square. It serves as the central meeting point of the pedestrian zone and is always bustling with students. This is no coincidence, as it is home to the central building of the University of Szeged, where the Rector’s Office is also located. Directly in front of the entrance, you can see the statue of Albert Szent-Györgyi, captured as if walking down the stairs. At the corner of the building stands the statue of Attila József, a former famous student and the university’s former namesake.
In front of the university, you’ll find the musical fountain, where students love to gather in good weather. In the evenings, a spectacular light and sound show accompanies the dance of the water jets. The fountain was completed to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Great Flood. From here, Kárász Street begins, leading to the Art Nouveau gem designed by Ede Magyar, the Ungár-Mayer Palace, with its dome adorned by gracefully dancing lead ladies. Throughout the year, the square hosts a variety of vibrant programs, city and university events, celebrations, festivals, and craft markets.
