Kárász Street (3 minutes/260 m)

Anyone visiting Szeged is sure to take a stroll at least once along the city’s Europa Nostra award-winning pedestrian street, Kárász Street. The promenade, adorned with beautiful plants, stylish benches, and elegant lampposts, with its charming terraces and small shops hidden in secret courtyards, lends a true Mediterranean atmosphere to the city. According to plans, from spring 2022, sun sails will protect pedestrians from the hot sunbeams.

It’s worth seeking out the charming welcoming statues located at both ends of the street, creations by Sándor Kligl. At the end towards Dugonics Square, on one side, a life-sized clown plays the violin, while opposite, a young lady, a little girl, and a dog listen. Those arriving from Széchenyi Square are greeted by statues dressed in Renaissance carnival costumes.

An integral part of Kárász Street is Klauzál Square, which has received an architectural award. The square is surrounded by imposing Neoclassical palaces, including the Kárász House, from where Lajos Kossuth delivered his last public speech in Hungary in 1849, which began: "People of Szeged, pride of my nation". The quote can also be read on the pedestal of the Kossuth statue standing in the square. The Virág Confectionery, which once saw better days, is also located here.
